For anyone writing strength workouts or training programs for swimmers, I can highly recommend the new book, World Book of Swimming: From Science to Performance. It is written by the who's who of swimming reseach and coaching and was many years in the making. New Exercise Physiology Text 23/03/2011
Kraemer, Fleck & Deschenes have produced a marvelous new textbook on exercise physiology. What makes this textbook so unique is its emphasis on practical application. Another great feature is the perspectives of various experts which are included in each chapter. This is a must have for all personal trainers. CEC Approved Hypertophy Workshop 22/03/2011
Last year I did a lecture tour sponsored by the Australian Fitness Network on training for hypertrophy. I discussed how I approach setting up hypertrophy programs for beginners, intermediate and advanced clients, with emphasis on exercise selection, technique, overload techniques and short-term periodization models. For those of you who missed it, I will be running the course again from my facility on Tuesday 19th April and Wednesday 20th April from 2pm-5pm (6 hours total, $500 for both days). The course has been approved for 6 CECs by Fitness Australia. For further information and to book your place, please email Rachel on Rachel@rachelluff.com PT Studio in the City 21/03/2011

Snatch grip deadlifts standing on a podium are one of the most challenging exercises that can be performed in a gym. I just posted on twitter.com/tonyboutagy some footage of one of our trainers Dan Harris performing a single while students were on the last day of the Upper Body Level 1 course. Note his 2 second pause just before the plates hit the platform. I also posted a short video of a NSWIS weightlifter front squatting. Earl Grey, Cholesterol & Heart Disease 16/03/2011
Anyone who has met me knows that I like my tea. Lately I've been going through a Earl Grey phase. The constituent in Early Grey that gives it the distinctive flavour is the citrus fruit, Bergamot. Interestingly, Bergamot polyphenols have been shown in a recent paper to reduce LDL cholesterol. If our clients decide not to use statin therapy, the four primary supplements we use to lower LDL cholesterol and improve cardiovascular health are: - BergaMet (Nathealth Solutions): 2 caps 10 minutes prior to breakfast and lunch; - Cho-Less (Natura)*: 4 caps with dinner or before bed; - Niacin**: 1000mg after breakfast and dinner; - Fish oil (EPA+DHA)***: 2-4g/day in divided doses with meals. *Cho-Less is a proprietary blend of red yeast rice, artichoke leaf, pantethine, guggul, beta-sitosterol and Policosanol made by Natura. ** Nicotinic acid is the preferred form of Niacin. *** For fish oil, we use both Beyond Essential Fats made by Natura (6 caps a day) with fish oil from Kingsway Compounding (3-4 caps a day). If you are interested in using any of these supplements for heart health, please email rachel@rachelluff.com for more information. References Houston MC, et al. One of the most common questions I am asked during a Level 1 Course is 'what journals should I read for ongoing education?'. There is no shortage of journals in our field to read, but here are a few that I read:
Karno's New Book 13/03/2011
One of my three ultra running heroes, Dean Karnazes, has just published his 3rd book, Run. Looks fantastic. More bed time reading for me this week. This guy is amazing and very inspiring. My other 2 ultra running heroes are, of course, Yiannis Kouros and Scott Jurek. Rounding out my top 5 endurance heroes are Lance Armstrong and Triathlete Mark Allen. My 5 Most Influential Books 13/03/2011
It is difficult to pick the 5 books that have influenced me the most as a personal trainer, as there are so many wonderful books and writers publishing. But here goes, in no particular order: This week I will be reading the just published Strength & Conditioning by Cardinale, Newton & Nosaka. Looks fantastic! In and out of Darwin 11/03/2011
Sitting in the airport just about to fly out of Darwin. I came up to present my PhD thesis to the department. 2 months to go until submission, so I am getting very excited. Spent 2 great days with my professor and talked about all things related to strength, power and speed with one of Australia's most noted sport scientist. Now back to Sydney, then up to the Blue Mountains for a night then back to Sydney for Part II of the Level 1 internship. |
