Earl Grey, Cholesterol & Heart Disease 16/03/2011
Anyone who has met me knows that I like my tea. Lately I've been going through a Earl Grey phase. The constituent in Early Grey that gives it the distinctive flavour is the citrus fruit, Bergamot. Interestingly, Bergamot polyphenols have been shown in a recent paper to reduce LDL cholesterol. If our clients decide not to use statin therapy, the four primary supplements we use to lower LDL cholesterol and improve cardiovascular health are: - BergaMet (Nathealth Solutions): 2 caps 10 minutes prior to breakfast and lunch; - Cho-Less (Natura)*: 4 caps with dinner or before bed; - Niacin**: 1000mg after breakfast and dinner; - Fish oil (EPA+DHA)***: 2-4g/day in divided doses with meals. *Cho-Less is a proprietary blend of red yeast rice, artichoke leaf, pantethine, guggul, beta-sitosterol and Policosanol made by Natura. ** Nicotinic acid is the preferred form of Niacin. *** For fish oil, we use both Beyond Essential Fats made by Natura (6 caps a day) with fish oil from Kingsway Compounding (3-4 caps a day). If you are interested in using any of these supplements for heart health, please email rachel@rachelluff.com for more information. References Houston MC, et al.
